Il dipinto raffigura un tema mitologico molto richiesto nel Cinquecento a Venezia e di cui Jacopo Tintoretto offrì una rara interpretazione (cfr. Venere, Vulcano e Marte, conservata a Monaco, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen). L’opera nel lotto rielabora in miniatura il formato allungato dei pannelli dei cassoni nuziali.
